Our Trip to China!

August 13 (I think!) - Guangzhou Airport
Well, we are here in Guangzhou Airport. This is the new airport - it just opened on August 5th. It is very nice and very big...I swear we walked a mile to get to our departure gate. There was mass confusion on our parts as to some 'airport fee' that we had to pay before we could get through security. Bill and Faye in our agency

group were not here 5 minutes before they were *almost* scammed. They went to what they thought was a currency counter, but realized quickly that they were not getting a correct exchange when the man behind the counter tried to change their money with money in his own wallet! They quickly backed out of the exchange and were no worse for wear

We are now here waiting in the Guangzhou airport with 5 other families from our agency waiting for our connection to Beijing. I (Jenna) had an adventure already! Not as many people as I thought speak English in the airport. Brian and I tried, unsuccessfully, to make an international phone call home to let the kids know that we were in China, safe and sound. The phone instructions were confusing, and we were not getting anywhere. I garnered enough information to figure out that the we needed some 'IC' Phone Card in order to make a call. I walked up and down the airport trying to find someone who understood enough English to tell me where I could buy one of these cards. Finally, I was able to find a store that sold the cards! I felt so triumphant just getting a phone card....then was immediately let down as I tried to figure out the phone! Ok...we're about to board for Beijing. I'll be in touch! Gotta Go!

August 13 - Beijing
We're in Beijing! It's now 9 PM on Friday and we are beat!!! We left Wednesday afternoon and it's now Friday morning at home. Looooong trip...and let me say that if you can possibly afford to upgrade to business class on the flight over...do it. The folks on our flight that did not upgrade were definitely feeling the trip more than those of us in business class.
Our hotel is very nice and has a great view of the park across the street. We are in a suburb near the Beijing airport. There is a cute little grocery store across the street and we ventured out to the local cuisine which was wonderful! I also got to see a little girl squat right in the street in her split pants and pee on the sidewalk, and then just keep on walking! Seems like a convenient way of doing things!

Tomorrow is the Great Wall of China, Tien An Men Square and the Summer Palace. I am really looking forward to those sites! I am absolutely exhausted now...we've been traveling for a very long time. I don't even want to go into the difficulty in leaving our other two babies at home because I don't want to start crying (again!)...but sufficed to say, we are going to have a wonderful homecoming! I'm going to go to bed now, and I'll post more tomorrow after we do the tours. China is wonderful and I am so excited to be here.
