Previous Information on Commonwealth International

Commonwealth International is an adoption agency helping families adopt from Russia, China, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, India, Taiwan, Viet Nam, and Ukraine. In addition to working in international adoption, Commonwealth Adoptions has a domestic program. Commonwealth Adoptions offers regular seminars describing their services along with webinars for people interested in Commonwealth Adoptions who live in areas away from their offices.

Commonwealth Adoptions International is an agency featuring programs in 10 countries. They offer adoption services throughout the United States and overseas.

Commonwealth was started in the mid ‘90s by Marina Mayhew who was originally from Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Commonwealth was the first accredited international adoption agency working in Russia.

Like all respected international adoption agencies, Commonwealth Adoptions works to educate their prospective parents to the challenges and rewards of adoption. The agency works to raise awareness and build excitement promoting the statement that, "well-educated and informed parents build strong families.

Unlike some adoption agencies, Commonwealth Adoptions works to give the prospective parents in their programs a realistic view. Not only relating the rewarding positives of adopting internationally, but also by preparing parents for issues that are unique to adoption. Health, attachment and often race issues are all factors that differentiate adoption from the birth experience and Commonwealth Adoption works to educate prospective parents about these issues.

Commonwealth Adoptions International has grown to over 100 staff members. The adoption agency boasts that a majority of its staff are adoptive parents.

According to Commonwealth, “We are professionals, driven by our mission and an abiding respect for the value of family. We will make your dream of family a reality.”

Often the first step to international adoption is visiting possible agencies to get a sense of their perspective on adoptions. But few options in research are as valuable as first hand experiences. In addition to digesting all of the promotional material offered by any agency, Commonwealth Adoptions included, it is important that prospective parents talk to parents who have gone through the process with Commonwealth to learn about their personal experiences.

You can also read international adoption stories on our site. Here are a couple that feature adoptive parents who worked with Commonwealth Adoptions:

Commonwealth Adoptions offers a comprehensive web site along with informational seminars for interested prospective parents. Please visit Commonwealth Adoptions to learn more.
