Guatemala Adoption

Our story of Adoption From Guatemala.

We finally got Andrew! He is great joy and blessing to us. The whole adoption experience was amazing, trying, joyful, gut-wrenching and most of all…totally worth it! Praise be to God for choosing our family to care for and nurture this beautiful baby boy.

We traveled to Guatemala on January 26, 2003. Andrew (given name Yurandir) was 7 months old at the time.

Prior to our trip, our adoption agency, All God’s Children International, informed us that two other couples would be traveling to Guatemala to pick up children at the same time. Shortly thereafter, we were contacted by Bill and Carmen Stanczykiewicz of Indiana. Jenny and Carmen quickly realized that both couples (Bill and Carmen and us) were traveling on the same day, at about the same time. We then realized that we’d each arrive in Atlanta at about the same time and then connect to Guatemala City on the same flight! Jenny and I were excited to know that we’d have someone with us while visiting a foreign country.

Searching for a needle in a haystack

We left Port Columbus Sunday morning and arrived in Atlanta a couple hours prior to boarding for Guatemala. We knew that Bill and Carmen would be there as well. We hoped we could find them and have a chance to talk with them prior to our flight. Only one problem…ATL is a huge airport with thousands of people. And, we had no clue what Bill and Carmen looked like.

guatemala-andrew1Jenny and I sat in the food court area, enjoying Starbucks Coffee and watching couples walk by, saying to one another, “That could be them…or them….or it could be that couple over there.”

Finally we spotted a couple carrying a diaper bag…with no baby! I said to Jenny, “We have winner!”

Now how do we approach them? What if it’s not them? Oh well, we thought. Let’s just ask. We approached the couple and asked, “You wouldn’t happen to be on your way to adopt a baby, would you?”

For a second, they each had a strange look on their faces, and then it clicked! It was Bill and Carmen! Carmen immediately gave Jenny a hug and thus was the beginning of what we hope will be a great friendship.

Jenny and I felt like we “clicked” instantly with Bill and Carmen. They are a wonderful Christian couple who have three biological children. Their story of wanting to adopt and going through the process was very much like ours. It was fun getting to know them.

It was also great just having someone with us while we traveled to an unfamiliar place. They were a great help and blessing to us. In fact, we got along with them so well that in many ways, it was almost like taking a vacation with really good friends. (more...)
